Artist: Paul Render
Theme: Sound, instruments and costumes

Music is a critical element that injects the parade with energy and atmosphere. Predominantly samba, we welcome a huge number of players in bands that are interspersed among the 2,000 participants in the parade. Regulars have included Baruhlo, Carnival Collective, Brighton School of Samba, Unified Rhythm, Skullduggery, Markatou and a host of guests from further afield

The thought of Burning the Clocks is never far away at this time of year... it draws ever closer and with it the promise of a night of spectacle and sound. I've tried to capture some of the elusive magic of that beautiful night, when the whole city is a sea of people and lanterns. At its beating heart are the Samba Bands, they're fantastic costumes declare that they are a part of and belonging to Burning the Clocks.

My lantern design is split into two semicircles, a yin and yang, black and white mirror for its two Samba drummers.

Paul became part of the Same Sky team  in 2008.

A samba poem by Paul Render

Burning ambition sets fire to the night
The year split in two
Brings a desire to make noise
In solstice celebration
Drums strike up
And stir the waiting throng
Within moments
People visibly lifted
As irresistible rhythm takes hold
The parade begins
And Samba holds sway
